What's all this government talk about unacceptable Russian aggression against a small sovereign state?
I’m certainly no apologist for Russia, but I think they have a strong case on this issue. Sometimes the wrong people can do the right thing.
South Ossetia has its own culture and language, and is essentially part of North Ossetia, which is inside Russia and very much orientated towards Russia in a way that the South has never been orienated towards Georgia. The vast majority of South Ossetians have Russian passports and there were Russian peacekeepers in the country to maintain a cease-fire that had been agreed. In these circumstances the Georgians were quite crazy to launch an attack on their capital city. Did they really expect the Russians to stand by while up to 1,500 civilians (including Russians) were being slaughtered? Click here for a full description of what really happened in Tskhinvali (something that has got very little coverage in our biased media) and here for a harrowing video of the same. What would the Americans have done if a state in their back yard was slaughtering people within its disputed borders who held American passports? And the parallels with our intervention on behalf of the Kosovians are much closer than government ministers would like to admit.
The Russian “invasion” was simply a response to a brutal attack without warning attack that had obviously been planned months in advance. If there were strikes outside the immediate conflict area , this was understandable given that they were directed at sites that were maintaining the Georgian war effort. The so-called provocations that preceded it were minor tit-for-tat skirmishes that are endemic in this part of the world and it was the barbaric Georgian response targeting the civilians of South Ossetia’s capital city that was massively disproportionate to what had gone before.
The Georgians have now reaped the whirlwind of what they had sown (in the hope that they would draw America into defending them). I have no sympathy whatsoever for them. If they had been in NATO we would either have been into World War 111 by now or they would literally have got away with murder.
