I'm reading Nick Davies's 'Flat Earth News' at the moment, and I think it's relevant to this debate.

Davies describes how the commercial pressure for a greater volume of output from news and media organisations, combined with cuts in staff, have led to a serious decline in journalistic standards.

I know you're talking more widely Rob, but the point still holds - BBC and C4 may be undergoing a funding squeeze from government, but they're not helping themselves, quality-wise, by insisting on such a high volume of output on myriad 'platforms'...
